Les mélomanes et les artistes du Mali, de l’Afrique et même du monde ont marqué un temps d’arrêt le vendredi 19 juillet 2024, quand la grande famille Diabaté a annoncé la mort de Toumani Diabaté.
Si au Mali la famille Diabaté jouit d’une renommée incontestable, dans le monde entier, du moins dans le cercle très fermé des consommateurs de la musique intemporelle, Toumani Diabaté est une véritable légende, légende qu’il a construit autour de l’instrument avec lequel il crée sa musique: la kora. La kora est un instrument de musique qui réuni en un instrument deux autres instruments que sont la luth et la harpe. La kora, instrument ancestral mandingue à 21 cordes, joué par les griots qui à travers chants et récits transmettait le patrimoine culturel oral du peuple mandingue.
La famille des djeli
La famille Diabaté se revendiquait descente des griots mandingue et c’était donné pour mission de préserver et de vulgariser la culture mandingue à travers cet instrument. Toumani Diabaté en était devenu le dépositaire légitime auprès du monde, talonné par son fils Sidiki Diabaté, plus connu des nouvelles générations. Qui était l’artiste Toumani Diabaté?
Toumani Diabaté est né 10 août 1965 à Bamako au Mali. Il est issu d’une longue lignée de Djeli (griot malien) dont l’ancêtre est Djelimakan Diabaté qui aurait été le griot d’un général de grand Soundjata Keita lui-même. Dans la grande famille Diabaté, la kora se transmet de père en fils et Toumani est le fils de Sidiki Diabaté et cousin de Mamadou Diabaté tous les deux de légendaires joueurs de Kora. Toumani Diabaté va sortir son premier album de musique en 1987 intitulé « Kaira » (Hannibal). Ce sera le début d’une riche discographie de 18 albums dont le dernier sera « The Sky Is The Same Colour Everywhere » avec Kayhan Kalhor.
Multirécompensé à travers le monde, L’album « In the Heart of the Moon obtient » le Grammy Awards du meilleur album traditionnel de musique du monde décerné le 8 février 2006. Le 13 février 2011, Ali Farka Touré et Toumani Diabaté ont remporté le Grammy du meilleur album de musique traditionnelle lors de la 53e cérémonie des Grammy Awards, à Los Angeles aux États-Unis, pour leur album « Ali and Toumani ». Les sonorités proposées par Toumani Diabaté avec sa kora lui vaut les invitations des plus grands conservatoires de musiques et des orchestres syphoniques à travers le monde: France, Angleterre, USA, Allemagne, Toumani aura parcourru le monde pour diffuser la musique de sa kora.
L’héritage transmis au fils
Le rayonnement international qu’il aura donné à la musique de la kora a fait de lui l’ambassadeur par excellence de la kora. En reconnaissance de sa contribution à la diffusion de la culture malienne, il sera fait Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mali en février 2020. On doit bien à la famille Toumani la popularisation du son de la kora dans la world musique et aussi dans la musique urbaine.
Sidiki Diabaté, plus connu de la nouvelle génération a pris le relai de son Toumani Diabaté dans la vulgarisation de la sonorité du kora depuis fort longtemps. Lorsque la plupart le découvre en 2015 avec le titre « Fais moi confiance », c’est un vrai coup de fraicheur que prend les mélomanes à travers cette proposition. On découvre un son zouk, rithmé par la kora. Depuis, Sidiki Diabaté n’a pas cessé d’enchainer les hits seul et en collaboration avec des artistes urbains de renommée. Quelque soit la proposition musicale, jamais la sonorité kora n’est absente de sa musique. Il a même été sollicité par le rappeur Booba pour poser des notes de kora sur son hit « DKR ».
Toumani Diabaté aura inscrit son nom à l’encre indélibile sur la musique africaine et mondiale. Il est partie du cercle des musiciens africains de légende, qui se démarquent par leur capacité à produire des musiques qui ne subissent pas l’usure du temps et de la mode. Des hommages venus de par le monde autant pour le défunt Toumani que pour son fils endeuillé prouve à quel point chaque génération des Diabaté arrive à marquer leur époque.
